But with the way the vape market is changing, L7 Vapors is strongly recommending that more customers consider switching to a standard vape device instead of relying only on disposables.
By “standard vape device,” we mean refillable pod systems, vape kits, tanks, coils, and bottled e-liquid options. These are the devices you keep, refill, recharge, and maintain instead of throwing away after each use.
The short version: standard vape devices are usually cheaper over time, offer more flavor flexibility, create less waste, and are more likely to remain available after January 1, 2027.
Standard Vape Devices Usually Cost Less Over Time
Disposables are easy, but that convenience usually comes at a higher long-term cost.
With a disposable vape, you are buying a battery, hardware, coil, e-liquid, packaging, and branding every single time. Even when the device still physically works, once the e-liquid is gone, the entire thing gets tossed.
With a standard vape device, the upfront cost is usually higher, but the long-term cost is typically lower because you are only replacing what actually needs to be replaced.
That usually means:
A refillable device or pod system
Replacement pods or coils as needed
Bottled e-liquid
Occasional accessories
For customers who vape regularly, the savings can add up quickly. It is not exactly thrilling math, but it is math that keeps more money in your pocket.
More Flavor Options
Disposable vapes are limited to whatever brand, model, and flavor combination happens to be available from distributors that week.
Standard devices give customers far more flexibility.
With bottled e-liquids, you are not locked into one disposable brand’s flavor lineup. You can choose from salt nicotine, freebase nicotine, different bottle sizes, different nicotine strengths, and a much wider range of flavor profiles.
That matters because the disposable market changes constantly. One month a flavor is everywhere. The next month it is gone, renamed, reformulated, delayed, or replaced by something with a name that sounds like it was created during a sugar rush.
With a refillable device, if one flavor disappears, there are usually more comparable options available.
Less Environmental Waste
Disposable vapes create more waste because each device includes a battery, plastic or metal housing, electronics, and leftover components that are discarded after use.
Standard vape devices are reused. You still replace coils, pods, and bottles, but you are not throwing away an entire device every time the e-liquid runs out.
So yes, standard devices generally have less environmental impact than disposables.
If you are into that kind of thing, great. If you are not, the cheaper-over-time part is still sitting right there doing all the heavy lifting.
Availability Is Becoming the Biggest Issue
The most important reason we are recommending standard vape devices is simple: availability.
Tennessee’s vapor product rules are changing. The Tennessee Department of Revenue states that beginning January 1, 2027, vapor products not listed in the state’s vapor product directory cannot be sold for retail sale in Tennessee. Products not listed in the directory after that date may also be subject to seizure, and sellers may face penalties.
That means customers should expect the disposable category to become much less predictable.
Some products may remain available. Others may not. Some brands may change their product lines. Some flavors may disappear. Some devices may not make it onto the directory at all.
The FDA also states that, as of May 2026, only 45 e-cigarette products are authorized for lawful sale in the United States. That is a very small number compared with the massive number of disposable devices, flavors, brands, and models currently seen across the market.
This does not mean every standard vape device or e-liquid is guaranteed to remain available forever. Nothing in this industry gets that kind of clean, simple answer because apparently that would be too convenient.
But compared with disposables, standard devices and refillable systems give customers more flexibility. You are not dependent on one exact disposable model, one exact flavor, one exact importer, or one exact SKU being available.
Why January 1, 2027 Matters
January 1, 2027 is a major date for Tennessee vapor product compliance.
Tennessee’s Department of Revenue has stated that vapor products not included in the state directory cannot be sold for retail sale in Tennessee beginning on that date. The state also says the vapor product directory will be published beginning January 1, 2026 and updated at least monthly.
For customers, that means the products available in stores may look very different after the rule is fully in effect.
Disposable vapes are expected to feel the biggest impact because so many popular disposables depend on very specific product registrations, supply chains, and manufacturer certifications.
Standard devices, refillable systems, and bottled e-liquids may provide a more stable path because customers can change flavors, change brands, change coils, or change pods without needing to abandon the entire setup.
Disposables Are Convenient, But Convenience Has a Catch
We are not pretending disposables are useless. They are popular for a reason.
They are easy.
They are simple.
They do not require much maintenance.
They work well for customers who do not want to deal with refills, coils, settings, or carrying a bottle of e-liquid.
But convenience has a catch. When availability changes, disposable users often have fewer backup options. If your favorite disposable brand or flavor disappears, you may have to start over with a completely different device.
With a standard vape device, the device stays the same. You just change the liquid, pod, or coil.
That is a much easier adjustment for most customers.
Standard Devices Give You More Control
A standard vape setup gives customers more control over the experience.
Depending on the device, customers may be able to choose:
Flavor
Nicotine strength
Salt nicotine or freebase nicotine
Pod or tank style
Coil resistance
Airflow
Vapor production
Battery capacity
Refill schedule
Disposables are mostly “take it or leave it.” Standard devices give you more room to dial things in.
And if you are not interested in becoming a vape hobbyist with a backpack full of spare parts, that is fine. Modern pod systems can be simple, compact, and easy to use without turning your nightstand into a science project.
